First date questions that get past the interview
Most first date conversations die at the same moment, when the questions start to sound like a job application. What do you do, where are you from, do you have siblings. None of these are bad, and all of them are forgettable. The questions that work give the other person something easy to answer and something worth listening to afterwards.
Below is a set that works, grouped by what you are actually trying to learn.
How they spend time
What does your perfect Saturday look like, start to finish? What did you get weirdly into last year? What would you do this weekend if money and guilt were not involved? What is the thing you could talk about for an hour that nobody ever asks you about?
These work because the answer is a small window into a life, and the follow-up writes itself.
How they think
What is a strong opinion you hold about something completely unimportant? What did you believe at 20 that you have completely reversed? What is the best thing you have read, watched or eaten this month? If you had a free day tomorrow and no one to answer to, what actually happens?
The playful ones

What is your most controversial food take? What is the worst film you love anyway? What skill would you pick up overnight if you could? Which fictional place would you live in, logistics aside?
Playful questions are load-bearing. How someone handles a silly question, whether they play along or correct the premise, tells you more about the next two hours than three CV questions combined.
The ones worth taking seriously
What does a good life look like to you, roughly? Is there anything you are actively working towards this year? What is something you have changed your mind about recently?
Ask these after the coffee arrives, not before. Early sincerity reads as an interview; late sincerity reads as a conversation.
What to skip
Skip interrogation chains. Five questions in a row with nothing of yours in between turns a date into a deposition, so trade answers like cards: question, answer, your own answer to your own question. And skip the trauma archaeology. A first date should not require anyone to open a wound.
One more thing
Questions work best between people who already share something: a friend group, a hobby, a city. That is why conversations on WYDM dates tend to start warmer. The two people usually have a connection in common before they ever sit down. If you would rather date people with a head start on the small talk, build your card.
