First date ideas that keep the pressure low
A first date has one job, which is to let two people find out whether they want a second one. Anything that works against that job, loud rooms, £80 tasting menus, four-hour hikes with someone you met on Tuesday, works against the date itself.
The ideas below keep the escape hatch open and the conversation possible. Pick by mood, not by impressiveness.
Coffee and a walk
The classic survives because it works. Forty minutes, a public place, an easy exit for both of you if it is not there, and an easy extension if it is. The walk after the coffee is where the second half of the conversation happens. Daytime dates are underrated. Nobody’s guard is up at 2pm.
Something with a built-in subject
A market, a museum with one weird exhibition, a bookstore, a street festival. The surroundings give you something to talk about when the small talk runs out, which it always does, and how a person reacts to a taxidermy collection or a bad street poet tells you more than another round of “so what do you do”.
Something slightly competitive

Minigolf, table tennis, an arcade, a quiz night where you lose together. Sides of people show up when they are losing to you with a plastic putter in hand. Keep it cheap and short. The losing is the point.
Food, done right
Skip the tasting menu. Pick a place with food you can eat while talking: noodles, a good burger, small plates where picking counts as a joint decision. Cooking classes work for a third date, not a first, because they lock you in for two hours with strangers.
Avoid
Cinema on a first date, because you sit in silence next to someone you have paid to ignore. Loud bars, because you will spend the hour nodding. Anything requiring costumes, equipment or a two-hour commitment. The date should be cancellable in the first twenty minutes without anyone losing face or money.
Where to find the person
The first date is easier when the person is not a total stranger. Meeting through friends, hobby groups or your wider circle means the first date starts with something to talk about and a rough idea of who is turning up. That is why WYDM dates people through their social circle instead of through swipes. It is safer by default, and the conversation starts warmer. If you want your first dates to start that way, build your card.
