Nearly every dating app now says it uses AI, and nearly none of them say where. That vagueness survives because “AI-powered” sounds like a feature. In practice the AI in dating apps does one of four jobs, and knowing which one an app uses tells you more than any landing page.

The category took a serious turn in 2026, when Bumble announced it was retiring the swipe in favour of an AI assistant matchmaker. The icebreaker survives as a tool and stays useless beyond the first message, because the second message has to be yours.

The profile writer

AI that writes your profile, and increasingly your photos. It works in the attention-economy sense, and it is getting easier to spot. The optimised profile performs better in the app, then reads as a promise the person has to keep in person. No generator can resolve that tension for you.

The matchmaker

AI that decides who sees whom: compatibility scores, “smart picks”, the algorithm everyone suspects and nobody can audit. The model underneath has real history, meeting online went from almost nothing to the biggest way couples meet. The problem is what the matchmaker optimises for. The platform measures engagement, and you wanted a relationship.

The agent
