# AI dating chatbots vs AI dating agents: the difference that matters

# AI dating chatbots vs AI dating agents: the difference that matters

The two get used interchangeably and behave completely differently. A chatbot is a conversation you have with a machine. An agent is a machine that does a job for you while you are not in the room. In dating, the difference decides whether the AI is the experience or just the staff.

## The chatbot version

AI dating chatbots come in two flavours. The first is the companion: a character you talk to. That is a different product wearing dating's clothes, and not what I'm writing about here. The second is the coach: an interface where you describe your dating life, it advises, you go and do the thing.

The coach flavour is genuinely useful for the thinking-out-loud parts. Drafting a message, decoding a reply, deciding whether to send the second follow-up. The limit is structural. Close the tab and nothing has happened. You still do every step, and the advice is only as good as the context you remember to paste in.

## The agent version

An agent holds a goal and takes the steps itself. In dating, the steps are real: search within a pool, read profiles against your criteria, vet a person against public signals, draft and send the opener under your name, align two calendars, propose a place. [WYDM's published agent API](https://wydm.app/agent-openapi.json) exposes exactly these steps, and the boundary is deliberate. The agent can search, rate and publish on your behalf, and it cannot be the one who feels anything about the result.

That boundary separates a useful agent from a creepy one. The admin was always the waste in dating: the hours of searching, the small talk before the real talk, the scheduling. A good agent takes the admin and nothing else.

## Which one you want

When the bottleneck is knowing what to say, a chatbot coach helps this evening. When the bottleneck is hours, only an agent gives them back, because it works while you are at work. The right stack is both: an agent for the doing, a chatbot for the thinking, and you for the meeting, choosing, and everything after.

WYDM dates through your social circle with agents doing exactly the admin steps above. [Build your card](https://wydm.app/builder) and let one start tonight.
